Reese Witherspoon Tells Her Kids When They're Bad At Something

Everyone has different parenting strategies... but for Reese Witherspoon, she believes honesty with her kids really is the best policy. And she swears that while her honest might seem "mean," it's not!

In an interview with Fast CompanyReese admitted that she will tell her kids when they aren't good at something and honest with them about the fact that things won't always go the way they hope.

She explained:

“I feel like I’m constantly counteracting pressure from the parents who want to make the lives of their kids golden and magical at all moments! Guess what, kids? You’re going to be disappointed and uncomfortable once in a while.”

Reese talked more about something that happened with her daughter Ava -who is also her total look alike! - when she found her crying in bed after a basketball game in high school.

Instead of just comforting her daughter and assuring her it would be okay, Reese took the brutally honest route.

“I said, ‘Aves, maybe you’re bad at basketball.’ She thought that was mean. I said, ‘Mean or true? ‘Cause, guess what? Your mom’s bad at basketball, too.'”

Look, Reese knows that the parenting tactic might sound a little harsh, but if what she is saying is TRUE, then is it MEAN? Not really, it's just honest.

I have so much respect for this parenting tactic! I think it can be really difficult to talk to your kids about the things that aren't exactly up their alley, but if you just admit that they're not going to be great at EVERYTHING, but they're going to be great at SOMETHING, then what's the issue!

I hope that I'm brave enough to tell my kids the honest truth when they're a little bit older about things like this, too. I'm sure it's not easy to tell your kids "hey you're not good at this," but I think it can be super beneficial!

Do you agree with being brutally honest?
