There's something about Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka's relationship that is so sweet, I may never get over it. Them, along with their twins, are so charming and so fun to follow on social media... and it may be because I'm a twin parent myself, but I just ADORE them.
Recently, David opened up about something that is incredibly important for them as a couple and as parents. It's a simple thing they do, but necessary. They show their kids what it looks like to actively work on their marriage.
David and Neil share 9-year-old twins, Harper and Gideon, and they make sure to show the kids what a healthy relationship looks like.
David shared with Us Weekly: “We try to go away or take a date night every so often because I think that’s really important, not only for the couple, but for the kids to see... The kids see that their parents are safe and their parents are on a good foot. Of course, they don’t want you to leave. ‘Please stay. Don’t go away from us.’ But it’s important for them to see that we are working on each other because it’s another job to cultivate.”
I mean. That alone is some of the best marriage AND parenting advice I've seen in a long time. It's so easy as parents to get caught up in busy day to day life and forget to go on a date or forget to spend time just the two of you. And your kids should see you going out and spending time together just as a couple as well!
And if you can't always make it out for date night - David says just taking time to be together and have a connection is important.
“Even if the kids fall asleep and we end up watching Netflix on the couch, that, we feel, is a connection because we’re sharing something... Or just cuddling in the morning or bringing each other a cup of coffee. It’s the little gestures that make up for the bigger stuff.”
